Modern Jive

What is Modern Jive?

Paul and Carol

Modern Jive is a partner dance that is similar to rock 'n' roll and old style jive, but is much easier to learn as there isnt any fancy footwork involved. In Modern Jive, the man leads and the lady follows. It is probably the fastest growing partner dances in the UK and widest taught in the world. It is a useful dance to learn, as it is easy to pick up and can be done at any social event, and it can be danced to any type of music from 1940's swing to recent chart hits. There are many other different franchises in the UK i.e Ceroc, Blitz, etc... but it is all Modern Jive.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No you dont - in Modern Jive you change partners every few minutes as the class rotates. This is so you're not dependent on one person, you don't pick up their bad habits, and you make loads of new friends! Everybody is encouraged to dance with everybody else throughout the evening.

What do I need to wear?

Basically, anything that you feel comfortable in, but preferably some shoes with either a smooth or leather sole so that they are easy to spin and turn in and light clothing as you will get very hot.

Do I have to come every week?

Modern Jive isn't taught like other dances. Each week you will be taught 4 beginners moves and the instructor will change these moves weekly. There are 20 beginners moves in total so if you miss a week the moves will be covered again.

When should I attempt the Intermediate class?

When you feel that you have got the hang of the beginners moves then you can try the intermediate class. We usually advise that you just stick with the beginners moves for 6 weeks but there is no rule as such. The most important thing is that you are happy and having a good time, so you should move on when your ready.
